ประวัติวันวาเลนไทน์

.. วันวาเลนไทน์ ..

วันวาเลนไทน์ นั้นมีมาตั้งแต่สมัยจักรวรรดิโรมัน ในกรุงโรมสมัยก่อนนั้น วันที่ 14 กุมภาพันธ์ จะเป็นวันเฉลิมฉลองของจูโน่ ซึ่งเป็นราชินีแห่งเหล่าเทพและเทพธิดาของโรมัน ชาวโรมันรู้จักเธอในนามของเทพธิดาแห่ง อิสตรีและการแต่งงาน และในวันถัดมาคือวันที่ 15 กุมภาพันธ์ ก็จะเป็นวันเริ่มต้นงานเลี้ยงของ Lupercalia การดำเนินชีวิตของเด็กหนุ่มและเด็กสาวในสมัยนั้นจะถูกแยกจากกันอย่างเด็ดขาด แต่อย่างไรก็ตาม ยังมีประเพณี อย่างนึง ซึ่งเด็กหนุ่มสาวยัง สืบทอดต่อกันมา คือ คืนก่อนวันเฉลิมฉลอง Lupercalia นั้นชื่อของเด็กสาวทุกคนจะถูกเขียนลงในเศษกระดาษเล็ก ๆ และจะใส่เอาไว้ในเหยือก เด็กหนุ่มแต่ละคนจะดึงชื่อของเด็กสาวออกจากเหยือก แล้วหลังจากนั้นก็จะจับคู่กันในงานเฉลิมฉลอง บางครั้งการจับคู่นี้ ท้ายที่สุดก็จะจบลงด้วยการ ที่เด็กหนุ่มและเด็กสาวทั้งสองนั้นได้ตกหลุมรักกันและแต่งงานกันในที่สุด

ภายใต้การปกครองของจักรพรรดิคลอดิอุสที่สอง (Claudius II) นั้น กรุงโรมได้เกิดสงครามหลายครั้ง และคลอดิอุสเองก็ประสบกับปัญหาในการที่จะหาทหารจำนวนมากมายมหาศาลมาเข้าร่วมในศึกสงคราม และเขาเชื่อว่าเหตุผลสำคัญก็คือ ผู้ชายโรมันหลายคนไม่ต้องการจากครอบครัวและคนอันเป็นที่รักไป และด้วยเหตุผลนี้เอง ทำให้จักรพรรดิคลอดิอุสประกาศให้ยกเลิกงานแต่งงานและงานหมั้นทั้งหมดในกรุงโรม ถึงกระนั้นก็ตาม ยังมีนักบุญผู้ใจดีคนหนึ่งซึ่งชื่อว่า ท่านนักบุญ " วาเลนไทน์ " ท่านเป็นพระที่กรุงโรมในสมัยของจักรพรรดิคลอดิอุสที่สองท่านนักบุญ วาเลนไทน์ และนักบุญ มาริอุส ได้จัดตั้งกลุ่มองค์กรเล็กๆ เพื่อช่วยเหลือชาวคริสเตียนที่ตกทุกข์ได้ยากเหล่านี้ และได้จัดให้มีการแต่งงานของคู่รักอย่างลับๆด้วย

และจากการกระทำเหล่านี้เอง ทำให้ นักบุญ วาเลนไทน์ ถูกจับและถูกตัดสินประหารโดยการตัดศรีษะ ในวันที่ 14 กุมภาพันธ์ ประมาณปีคริสต์ศักราชที่ 270 ซึ่งถือเป็นวันที่ท่านได้ทนทุกข์ทรมานและเสียสละเพื่อเพื่อนมนุษย์

.. ทำไมจึงชื่อ " วันวาเลนไทน์ " ..

วันที่ 14 กุมภาพันธ์ ของทุกปีเป็น วันวาเลนไทน์ ซึ่งพวกหนุ่มสาวมักจะรีบไปซื้อบัตรส่งทักทายกันส่งใจถึงกัน นับเป็นความนิยมมากขึ้น ประเพณีนี้เข้ามาสู่ประเทศไทยทีละเล็กละน้อย และดูเหมือนจะเป็นที่นิยมมากขึ้นทุกปี เป็นประเพณีที่หนุ่มสาวนิยมกันมากเป็นพิเศษที่สหรัฐอเมริกาและที่ประเทศอังกฤษ

ทำไมจึงมีชื่อว่า “ วันวาเลนไทน์ ” และความหมายที่แท้จริงของวันนี้คืออะไร? และมาจากไหน?

นักบุญ วาเลนไทน์ (Valentine) เป็นสงฆ์คาทอลิกองค์หนึ่งที่ได้ถูกประหารชีวิตในวันที่ 14 กุมภาพันธ์ คริสตศักราช 270 ในสมัยพระเจ้าจักรพรรดิโรมัน เกลาดิอุส ที่ 2 ( Clanoius) โดยแท้จริงแล้วท่านนักบุญไม่มีส่วนเกี่ยวข้องกับประเพณีการเลือกคู่ หรือหาคู่ หรือหาแฟน หรือความรัก ความสนใจระหว่างหนุ่มสาว ท่านก็ไม่ได้ไปเกี่ยวข้องด้วยเลย ถ้าเช่นนั้นแล้ว ทำไมจึงเลือกนักบุญองค์นี้มาเป็นองค์อุปถัมภ์สำหรับผู้ที่กำลังหาคู่ เลือกคู่หรือเลือกแฟนกันได้เล่า ? เหตุผลที่ค้นพบได้ก็คือ ที่มาของวันวาเลนไทน์ ไม่ขึ้นอยู่กับคนผู้นี้ แต่ขึ้นอยู่กับวันที่ 14 กุมภาพันธ์

ประเพณีเลือกคู่ หรือหาคู่นี้มีมาแต่โบร่ำโบราณในทุกชาติ ดูเหมือนกับว่าได้เกิดขึ้นพร้อมกับวิวัฒนาการของมนุษย์ก็ว่าได้ ประเพณี วาเลนไทน์ นี้ก็มีต้นเหตุหรือ ที่มาสมัยที่จักรวรรดิโรมันแผ่อิทธิพลไปทั่ว ชาวโรมันสมัย โบราณมีการฉลองเทพเจ้าองค์หนึ่งชื่อ ลูแปร์คูส (Lupercus) ซึ่งตรงกับวันที่ 15 กุมภาพันธ์ และถือว่าเป็นการฉลองใหญ่ ส่วนหนึ่งของการฉลองใหญ่นี้ก็จะเป็นการจัดงานหาคู่ของพวกหนุ่มสาว ซึ่งจัดขึ้นในวันก่อนวันฉลองใหญ่ 1 วัน คือวันที่ 14 กุมภาพันธ์ นี้จะถือโอกาสให้พวกหนุ่มสาวเสนอตัวเป็นคนรักกันชั่วระยะเวลา 1 ปี ช่วงนี้จะเรียกว่าเป็นช่วงทดลองมิตรภาพเพื่อดูว่าทั้งคู่จะมีนิสัยใจคอเข้ากันได้หรือไม่ ชาวโรมันเป็นคนศรัทธาในเทพเจ้า และสิ่งศักดิ์สิทธิ์ต่าง ๆ ก็มีความเชื่อกันว่าพวกตนมีเทพเจ้าองค์หนึ่งซึ่งเขาขอให้เป็นผู้ดูแลความรักของเขาในระหว่างช่วงระยะเวลาการทดลองเป็นคู่รักกัน 1 ปี นั้น เทพเจ้าองค์นี้เป็นหญิงชื่อเทพธิดา Juno Februata ซึ่งตาม เทพนิยายของชาวโรมันเป็นมเหสีของ Jupiter องค์มหาเทพเจ้าทั้งหลาย

ครั้นต่อมา เมื่อชาวโรมันส่วนใหญ่กลับใจมาถือศาสนาคริสต์ (ตั้งแต่ปลายศตวรรษที่ 4 ) ประเพณีของหนุ่มสาวที่จะหาคู่เพื่อทดลองเป็นคนรักกัน เพื่อจะแต่งงานกันในเวลาต่อไปนั้นก็ยังนิยมทำกันอยู่ แม้ว่าจะเป็นคริสตชนแล้วก็ตาม ฉะนั้นเขาก็ยังรักษาประเพณีการเลือกคู่ในวันที่ 14 กุมภาพันธ์นั้นอยู่ตลอดมา เพียงแต่ว่าหนุ่มสาว โรมันชาวคริสต์ได้หันมาเปลี่ยนตัวผู้อุปถัมภ์องค์ใหม่ เพราะคริสตชนไม่นับถือเทพเจ้าหรือเทพธิดาอย่างกาลก่อน เขาจึงหันมาเลือกหานักบุญในคริสตศาสนาที่มี วันฉลองในวันที่ 14 กุมภาพันธ์ ซึ่งก็มี นักบุญวาเลนไทน์องค์นี้เอง จึงขอยืมชื่อท่านมาเป็นองค์อุปถัมภ์แทนเทพเจ้าเดิมของชาวโรมัน เรื่องราวความเป็นมามีดังนี้ ฉะนั้นถ้าท่านนักบุญมีชีวิตอยู่ท่านอาจรู้สึกงงงวยในตำแหน่งที่หนุ่มสาวได้เลือกตั้งและแต่งตั้งให้ท่านเป็นผู้อุปถัมภ์ โดยที่ท่านไม่ได้รู้เรื่องทางโลกของหนุ่มสาวด้วยเลยแม้แต่น้อย

ความรักระหว่างหนุ่มสาวนั้นอาจจะเผชิญกับอันตรายบางอย่าง และอาจจะเป็นโอกาสให้พลังและความรักนั้นทำลายความสัมพันธ์อันสูงส่งระหว่างหนุ่มสาวนั้นเอง ความหมายของการมี วันวาเลนไทน์ นี้ก็คือการช่วยหนุ่มสาวหาวิธีการเพื่อเสริมสร้างความสัมพันธ์ซึ่งกันและกันด้วยใจบริสุทธิ์

ความหมายเห็นได้ชัดในคำว่า “You are my Valentine” ที่มักจะเขียนลงในบัตรส่งใจถึงกันและกัน ประโยคตามความหมายเดิม หมายถึงว่า “ข้าพเจ้าขอเสนอตัวเป็นเพื่อนสนิทของท่านในช่วงเวลา 1 ปี และข้าพเจ้าพร้อมที่จะตกลงแต่งงานกับท่าน ถ้ามิตรภาพของเรานี้เป็นสิ่งที่ยืนยง”

ลักษณะความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างหนุ่มสาวที่จะช่วยให้ก้าวหน้าในความรักที่แท้จริงนั้น ก็ควรจะประกอบด้วย 3 ข้อด้วยกัน ดังนี้

1. ให้รู้จักกันทั้งในด้านดี ในด้านเสีย และข้อผิดพลาดซึ่งต่างก็มีอยู่ และยอมรับซึ่งกันและกันในข้อเหล่านั้น
2. ให้เคารพและเห็นใจกัน โดยเสียสละต่อกันเพื่อให้คนรักของตนได้รับความดี และความสุขใจในทางที่บริสุทธิ์งดงาม
3. ให้มีการปรับปรุง และเปลี่ยนนิสัยของตนในส่วนที่บกพร่อง เพื่อจะอยู่กันด้วยความสุขในอนาคต

ลักษณะทั้งสามดังกล่าวนี้ คงจะเป็นประโยชน์สำหรับหนุ่มสาวไทยไม่เฉพาะ ในวันวาเลนไทน์หรือสำหรับกลุ่มที่นิยมประเพณีต่างประเทศเท่านั้น แต่สำหรับทุกคู่ที่แสวงหาวิธีการเพื่อเสริมสร้างความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างกันอัน จะนำไปสู่ความรักที่มั่นคงและยั่งยืนชั่วชีวิต

.. คิวปิด ..

คนทั่วไปรู้จัก คิวปิด ในภาพของเด็กน่ารักที่มีปีก มือถือคันธนูกับลูกศรและมีชื่อเสียงในเรื่องการยิงศรรักปักหัวใจของใครต่อใคร ศรรักของ คิวปิด หมายถึงความปรารถนาและอารมณ์แห่งความรัก คิวปิด จะเล็งลูกศรไปที่พระเจ้าและมนุษย์เพื่อทำให้พระเจ้ากับมนุษย์รักกัน
คิวปิดมักจะมีบทบาทในการเฉลิมฉลองความรัก ในกรีกโบราณ คิวปิด เป็นที่รู้จักกันในชื่อว่า เอโรส ลูกชาย แอฟโพไดท์ เทพธิดาแห่งความรักและความสวยงามแต่สำหรับพวกโรมัน เขาคือคิวปิด และแม่ของเขาคือ วีนัส

มีเรื่องน่าสนใจพอสมควรเกี่ยวกับ คิวปิด และ ไซคี เจ้าสาวของเขาในเทพนิยายโรมัน ผมขอแนะนำผู้อ่านให้รู้จักคู่รักของ คิวปิด สักนิดนะครับว่าเธอเป็นเทพธิดารูปงามในนิยายกรีกโบราณมีปีกเป็นผีเสื้อ และเพราะความงามนี้เองที่ทำให้ วีนัส อิจฉา นางจึงได้สั่ง คิวปิด ให้ลงโทษว่าที่ลูกสะใภ้เสีย แต่ คิวปิด ตกหลุมรักเธอเกินกว่าที่จะทำตามความต้องการของแม่ ดังนั้น แทนที่จะลงโทษเธอ คิวปิด กลับเอาเธอเป็นภรรยาเสียเลย แต่เนื่องจาก ไซคี มิได้เป็นอมตะ เธอจึงถูกห้ามมิให้มองเขา (ตรงนี้ผมไม่ทร าบเหมือนกันนะครับว่าเป็นไปได้อย่างไรที่ได้เธอเป็นภรรยาแล้วภรรยามองไม่ได้ แต่อย่าไปคิดอะไรมากนะครับ เพราะเทพนิยายฝรั่งก็ไม่แตกต่างอะไรไปจากละครน้ำเน่าบ้านเรา)

หลังจากตกเป็นภรรยาของ คิวปิด แล้ว ไซคี ก็มีความสุขเรื่อยมา (ก็แหงละ) จนกระทั่งพี่สาวของเธอได้รบเร้าให้เธอมอง คิวปิด ทันทีที่เธอมอง คิวปิด คิวปิด ก็ลงโทษเธอด้วยการทิ้งเธอไปทันที พร้อมกันนั้นปราสาทและสวนอันสวยงามของเธอก็ต้องมลายหายไปด้วย หลังจากนั้นไซคี ก็พบว่าตัวเองอยู่ตามลำพังในทุ่งโล่งแห่งหนึ่งซึ่งไม่มีร่องรอยของสิ่งมีชีวิตอื่นๆหรือ คิวปิด ปรากฏให้เห็นเลย

ในขณะที่เธอออกเดินทางค้นหาคนรักของเธอนั้น เธอก็มาถึงวิหารของ วีนัส โดยบังเอิญ เมื่อ วีนัส เทพธิดาแห่งความรักพบว่า ไซคี ยังมีชีวิตอยู่ เธอก็ปราถนาที่จะ ทำลาย ไซคี ด้วยการให้งานที่หนักและอันตรายเพิ่มขึ้นเรื่อยๆ งานสุดท้ายที่ ไซคี ได้รับมิใช่งานขับเครื่องบินชนตึกเวิร์ลเทรดครับ หากแต่เธอได้รับกล่องใบหนึ่งมาและได้ถูกสั่งให้ลงไปยังใต้โลกเพื่อเอา ความงามของ โพรเซอร์พีน ภรรยาของ พลูโต ใส่กล่องใบนี้มา ในระหว่างที่เธอเดินทางอยู่นั้น เธอก็ได้รับคำแนะนำให้รู้จักการหลีกเลี่ยงอันตรายจากอาณาจักรแห่งความตาย นอกจากนั้นแล้ว เธอยังได้ถูกเตือนมิให้เปิดกล่องใบนั้นอีกด้วย แต่เพราะทนไม่ไหวหรือเพราะความอยากรู้อยากเห็นหรืออะไรก็ไม่ทราบ เธอได้เปิดกล่องใบนั้น แต่แทนที่จะพบกับความงาม เธอกลับต้องหลับเป็นตาย

ต่อมา คิวปิด ได้มาพบร่างอันไร้ชีวิตของเธอบนพื้นดิน เขาจึงได้นำเอาอาการหลับเป็นตายออกจากร่างของเธอและนำมันไปเก็บไว้ในกล่อง หลังจากนั้น คิวปิด ก็ได้ให้อภัยเธอเช่นเดียวกับ วีนัส เมื่อเทพเจ้าทั้งหลายเห็นความรักที่เธอมีต่อ คิวปิด จึงได้ตั้งให้เธอเป็นเทพธิดาองค์หนึ่ง

ปัจจุบันนี้รูป คิวปิด แผลงศรเป็นสัญลักษณ์แห่งความรักที่ผู้คนมักนิยมใช้กัน และเมื่อศรรักของ คิวปิด พุ่งโดนหัวใจหนุ่มสาวคนใดในวันวาเลนไทน์ หนุ่มสาวคนนั้นก็จะออกอาการ "สติวปิ้ด" จากศรรักของ คิวปิด ขึ้นมาทันที อาการนี้จะเห็นได้จากการส่งดอกกุหลาบสีแดง ส่งช็อคโกแล็ต การส่งบัตรอวยพรและอื่นๆ อีกครับ

หมายเหตุท้ายบท : "สติวปิ้ด" เป็นภาษาอังกฤษแปลว่า "โง่" ครับ เหมือนคำบางคำที่เราอาจเคยได้ยินว่า "ความรักบางครั้งก็ทำให้คนตาบอด และ มองไม่เห็นข้อบกพร่องของคนที่เรารัก"

.. ดอกไม้ " วันวาเลนไทน์ " ..

มนุษย์ได้ใช้ดอกไม้เป็นสื่อในการแสดงความรักต่อกันมานานแล้ว เราอาจจะคิดว่าดอกไม้เป็นสิ่งที่สามารถใช้สื่อความหมายเฉพาะความรักของหนุ่มสาวเท่านั้น แต่แท้จริงแล้ว ดอกไม้แต่ละชนิดสามารถสื่อความรักได้หลาย รูปแบบ ทั้งยังไม่จำกัดอายุและเพศอีกด้วย

	กุหลาบตูม หมายถึง ความรักและความเยาว์วัย
	กุหลาบบาน หมายถึง ความรักที่กำลังเบ่งบาน ความอ่อนหวาน สดชื่น
	กุหลาบดำ หมายถึง ความรักนิรันดร์
	กุหลาบแดง (red rose) : จะใช้ในความหมายแทน ประโยคที่ว่า "ฉันรักเธอ" การให้ดอกกุหลาบแดงกับคนที่รักความ หมายถึงความรักอันลึกซึ้ง จริงจัง กุหลาบแดงจึงมักจะเป็นดอกไม้ ที่ชายหนุ่มให้หญิงสาวที่ตนเองตั้งใจจะใช้ชีวิตร่วมกัน
	กุหลาบขาว (white rose) : สีขาวเป็นสีแห่งความบริสุทธ์ กุหลาบขาวจึงแทนความหมายแห่งความรักอันบริสุทธิ์ไม่ต้องการสิ่งตอบแทน ดังนั้นมันจึงสามารถใช้แทนความรักของคนต่างวัย ความรักต่อพ่อแม่ เพื่อน หรือคนที่เรารู้สึกดีด้วยอย่างบริสุทธิ์ใจได้
	กุหลาบชมพู (pink rose) : มักถูกใช้แทนความรักแบบโรแมนติก และความเสน่หาต่อกัน การให้ดอกกุหลาบสีชมพูสามารถแสดงถึงความรัก ที่กำลังเริ่มงอกงามในใจ และสามารถพัฒนาต่อไปเป็นความรักที่ลึกซึ้งได้
	กุหลาบเหลือง (yellow rose) : สีเหลืองเป็นสีแห่งความสดใส กุหลาบสีเหลืองถูกใช้สำหรับแทนความรักแบบเพื่อน และความ สนุกสนานรื่นเริงจึงมักจะนำมันมาประดับตะกร้าสำหรับเยี่ยมผู้ป่วย เพื่อทำให้คนป่วยรู้สึกสดชื่นรื่นเริงขึ้นนั่นเอง
	สำหรับดอกไม้อื่น ๆ ที่ถูกมาใช้แทนความหมายแห่งความรักก็มี ดอกทิวลิบสีแดง (red tulib) ชาวตะวันตกใช้มันแทนการประกาศความรัก อย่างเปิดเผย คล้าย ๆ กับดอกกุหลาบแดง
	ดอกคาร์เนชั่นสีชมพู (pink carnation) ใช้สื่อความหมายว่า "ถึงอย่างไรผมก็ยังรักคุณ" หรือ "คุณยังอยู่ในหัวใจฉันเสมอ"
	ดอกลิลลี่สีขาว (white lilly) แสดงความรักแบบบริสุทธ์ เช่นเดียวกันกับดอกกุหลาบขาว นอกจากนั้นลิลลี่สีขาวยังแสดงถึงความรักแบบอ่อนหวานจริงใจ และเทอดทูน และมักถูกใช้แทนประโยคที่ว่า "ฉันรู้สึกดี ๆ ที่ได้ได้รู้จัก และอยู่ใกล้คุณ "
	สำหรับดอก forget-me-not มีความหมายตรงตัวคือได้โปรดอย่าลืมฉัน และอย่าลืมความรู้สึกดี ๆ ที่เคยมีให้กัน
	มาถึงดอกไม้ที่เห็นได้ทั่วไปในบ้านเราบ้างดอกทานตะวัน (sunflower) มีความหมายถึงความรักแบบคลั่งไคล้ ความรักแบบบูชา แต่สำหรับชาวตะวันตก ดอกทานตะวันจะหมายถึงความเข้มแข็งอดทน จึงสามารถใช้แทนความรักที่ต้องฝ่าฟันกว่าจะได้ความรักมา

จะเห็นได้ว่าดอกไม้เป็นประดิษฐกรรมทางธรรมชาติที่มนุษย์เรานำมาใช้เป็นสื่อแทนความหมาย แห่งความรักได้หลายรูปแบบ การมอบดอกไม้ให้กับคนที่เรามีความรู้สึกพิเศษจึงเป็นสิ่งที่ไม่ควรมองข้าม ... Vlentine นี้คุณมีดอกไม้ในใจที่จะให้คนที่คุณรักแล้วหรือยัง

วันวาเลนไทน์ในประเทศญี่ปุ่น วันวาเลนไทน์กับชอคโกแลต ช๊อกโกแล็ต

.. ชอคโกแลตกับวันวาเลนไทน์ ..

ในวันวาเลนไทน์ที่ประเทศญี่ปุ่น ฝ่ายหญิงนิยมที่จะมอบชอคโกแลตให้กับฝ่ายชาย (ส่วนผู้ชายจะมอบของขวัญตอบแทนให้กับผู้หญิงในวันที่ 14 มีนาคม ซึ่งเรียกวันนั้นว่า White Day หรือ วันสีขาว) ความนิยมการมอบชอคโกแลตนั้นเกิดขึ้นมาจากการใช้เครื่องมือทางการตลาดของบริษัทผลิตชอคโกแลต ผู้หญิงญี่ปุ่นถูกกระตุ้นให้บอกรักอย่างชัดเจนกับผู้ชายโดยการมอบชอคโกแลตและของขวัญชนิดอื่นในวันที่ 14 กุมภาของทุกปี

ร้านขายของชำ ห้างสรรพสินค้า และร้านสะดวกซื้อจะขายชอคโกแลตที่หลากหลายมาก ไม่ว่าจะเป็น ชอคโกแลตที่ผลิตในประเทศหรือนำเข้ามาจากต่างประเทศ มากกว่าครึ่งหนึ่งของยอดขายชอคโกแลตทั้งปีนั้น จะมาจากช่วงวันวาเลนไทน์ เหตุก็เพราะผู้หญิงแดนอาทิตย์อุทัยจะซื้อชอคโกแลตเพื่อแจกให้กับทั้งเพื่อนร่วมงาน หัวหน้า เพื่อนชาย พี่ชาย คุณพ่อ สามี แฟน และผู้ชายที่เธอรู้จักและมีความยินดีที่จะมอบให้

ชอคโกแลตที่มอบให้กับผู้ชายที่เธอไม่ได้หลงรัก ถูกเรียกว่า “giri-choco” (แปลว่า ชอคโกแลตที่ให้ตามหน้าที่ หรือ ชอคโกแลตตามมารยาท) เช่น ชอคโกแลตที่มอบให้กับเพื่อนร่วมงาน หรือกับหัวหน้างานเป็นต้น

เทศกาลจีนมีอยู่มากมาย ตรุษจีนเป็นเทศกาลที่สำคัญที่สุดของจีน เป็นวันขึ้นปีใหม่ตามปฎิทินจีน เช่นเดียวกับสงกรานต์วันปีใหม่ไทย ทุกคนต่างให้ความสำคัญอย่างยิ่งต่างหยุดงาน โรงเรียนสถาบันการศึกษาต่างปิดเทอมในช่วงนี้ เป็นปิดเรียนฤดูหนาว ยกเว้นคนที่ต้องทำหน้าที่ไม่สามารถหยุดงานได้ หน่วยงานห้างร้านต่างก็หยุดงาน 3-4 วัน เมื่อใกล้วันปีใหม่จีน ผู้คนต่างก็มีการตระเตรียมงานปีใหม่ ภายในครอบครัว ทุกบ้านก็จะทำความสะอาดบ้านเรือน ผ่านปีใหม่อย่างสะอาดสะอ้านสดใส ร้านค้าห้างสรรพสินค้าต่างก็เติมไปด้วยผู้คนมาจับจ่ายใช้สอย ซื้อเสื้อผ้าใหม่ให้แก่เด็กๆ ซื้อของขวัญให้แก่ญาติสนิทมิตรสหาย ซื้อบัตรอวยพร ในตลาดก็คราคร่ำไปด้วยผู้คน ต่างเดินไปเดินมากันขวักไขว่ ซื้อปลาบ้าง ซื้อเนื้อสัตว์บ้าง ซื้อเป็ดไก่บ้าง ทุกคนต่างดูแจ่มใสมีความสุข ช่วงเทศกาลปีใหม่ เด็กๆต่างมีความสุขมาก ต่างสวมเสื้อใหม่ ทานลูกกวาดขนมหวาน เล่นพลุประทัดอย่างรื่นเริง

ตรุษจีน คือ วันขึ้นปีใหม่ของชาวจีน
สมัยโบราณในยุคราชวงศ์ต่างๆ นับช่วงพ้นปีเก่าเข้าปีใหม่แตกต่างกันไป กระทั่งปี 105 B.C. ฮั่นอู่ตี้ฮ่องเต้แห่งราชวงศ์ฮั่นปรับเปลี่ยนระบบปฏิทินใหม่ให้เป็นมาตรฐานเดียวกัน เรียกว่า ปฏิทินไท่ชูลี่ ปฏิทินไท่ชูลี่ ปรับปรุงขึ้นจากระบบปฏิทินของราชวงศ์เซี่ย (21-16 ศตวรรษ B.C.) ถือเอาวันแรกของปักษ์ลี่ชุน เป็นวันขึ้นปีใหม่

ชาวจีนนับเอาวันนี้เป็นวันขึ้นปีใหม่มา 2010 ปีแล้ว วันตรุษจีนหรือปีใหม่นี้ จีนโบราณเรียกว่า กั้วเหนียน ผ่านปีหรือ หยวนตั้น – ขึ้นปีใหม่

เทศกาลตรุษปีใหม่หรือตรุษวสันต์นี้ เดิมเป็นเทศกาลเฉลิมฉลองการเก็บเกี่ยวที่อุดมสมบูรณ์ นักวิชาการเริ่มวิเคราะห์จากคำว่า “เหนียน” 年ซึ่งปัจจุบันแปลว่า ปี เทศกาลตรุษจีน เรียกอีกชื่อหนึ่งว่า “กั้วเหนียน”

ในสมัยโบราณ (ก่อนราชวงศ์โจว) เหนียน หมายถึง รอบการเจริญเติบโตของธัญพืชรอบหนึ่ง ธัญพืชสุกพร้อมที่จะเก็บเกี่ยว และ/หรือหมายถึงความอุดมสมบูรณ์ของการเพาะปลูก ดังนั้น คำว่า “กั้วเหนียน” เดิมทีมิได้หมายถึงการสิ้นปีเก่าขึ้นปีใหม่ แต่หมายความว่า ในปีนั้นๆ เก็บเกี่ยวได้อุดมสมบูรณ์

โดยทั่วไปแล้ว การเพาะปลูกในตงง้วนจะเก็บเกี่ยวกันตอนปลายฤดูใบไม้ร่วง ส่วนฤดูหนาวคือช่วงระยะล่าสัตว์ เมื่อเราย้อนกลับไปดูการกำหนดเดือนอ้ายขึ้นปีใหม่ในปฏิทินโบราณทั้ง 4 ระบบ จะเห็นว่าก๊กเซี่ย ขึ้นปีใหม่ตอนปลายเดือนมกราคม ก๊กซางขึ้นปีใหม่ตอนปลายเดือนธันวาคม ก๊กโจวขึ้นปีใหม่ตอนปลายเดือนพฤศจิกายน ก๊กฉินขึ้นปีใหม่ตอนปลายเดือนตุลาคม ที่ต่างกันดังนี้ อาจเนื่องมากจากความแตกต่างของฤดูกาล

เทศกาลปีใหม่มีขึ้นอย่างเป็นเอกภาพพร้อมเพรียงกัน หลังจากจักรพรรดิฮั่นอู่ตี้ประกาศใช้ปฏิทินไท่ชูลี่ เมื่อค.ศ. 105 แล้ว ดังนั้น อาจกล่าวว่า เทศกาลปีใหม่จีนหรือตรุษจีนเริ่มกำหนดอย่างเป็นทางการในรัชสมัยฮั่นอู่ตี้ ในส่วนคติชาวบ้านก็มีนิทานพื้นบ้านอธิบายว่าทำไมจึงเรียกเทศกาลตรุษวสันต์ว่า “กั้วเหนียน” เช่นกัน ดังนี้ ในรัชสมัยของจู๋อี่ โอรสสวรรค์องค์ที่ 14 แห่งราชวงศ์ซาง มีชายหนุ่มคนหนึ่งชื่อ ว่านเหนียน 万年เห็นว่าการประกาศปฏิทินกำหนดฤดูกาลของราชสำนักมีความผิดพลาดคลาดเคลื่อนไป จากสภาพภูมิอากาศที่เป็นจริง อันก่อผลเสียหายแก่การกสิกรรมและการปศุสัตว์มาก ว่านเหนียนจึงพากเพียรพยายามติดตามศึกษาดาราศาสตร์ ศึกษาเงาตะวันจากนาฬิกาแดด เป็นต้น จนกระทั่งทราบต้นตอที่มาของความผิดพลาด การคำนวณปฏิทินแบบเดิม

ขณะนั้นโอรสสวรรค์จู่อี่เอง ก็ทรงร้อนพระทัยห่วงใยที่การกำหนดฤดูกาลไม่แม่นยำ แต่ทว่าอาเหิง อำมาตย์ผู้ควบคุมการคำนวณฤดูกาลไม่ยอมรับว่าตนด้อยความรู้ความสามารถ กลับเสนอจู่อี่ว่า การที่ฤดูกาลไม่ตรงกับที่ได้คำนวณกำหนดไว้นั้น เนื่องมาจากพลเมืองกระทำมิดีผิดผีลบลู่เทพยดาฟ้าดิน

โอรสสวรรค์จักต้องก่อสร้างหอมหึมาแล้วนำอำมาตย์ทั้งมวลขึ้นไปบวงสรวงเทพยดาฟ้าดินพร้อมกัน จู๋อี่ ทรงเชื่อตามที่อาเหิงเสนอ จึงทรงสั่งให้เก็บส่วยจากพลเมืองในแคว้น เพื่อนำมาเป็นค่าใช้จ่ายสำหรับบวงสรวงฟ้าดิน ฝ่ายว่านเหนียนเห็นว่าการทำเช่นนี้ มิอาจแก้ปัญหาอันใดได้เลย รังแต่จะเพิ่มความทุกข์ยากลำบากต่อราษฎรเป็นทวีคูณ ว่านเหนียนจึงขอเข้าเฝ้าจู๋อี่ แล้วอธิบายสาเหตุที่การคำนวณปฏิทินแบบเก่าผิดพลาดคลาดเคลื่อนให้จู๋อี่ฟัง

จู๋อี่ทรงยอมรับหลักการของว่านเหนียน จึงระงับพิธีบวงสรวงนั่นเสีย แล้วสร้างหอดาราศาสตร์ให้ว่านเหนียนใช้ทำงานค้นคว้า อาเหิงแทนที่จะดีใจที่วิทยาการจะก้าวหน้าขึ้น แกกลับอิจฉาริษยาว่านเหนียน เกรงว่าหากว่านเหนียนปรับปรุงปฏิทินสำเร็จ ตนจะถูกปลดออกจากตำแหน่งขุนนาง อาเหิงจึงว่าจ้างมือสังหารไปฆ่าว่านเหนียน แต่เนื่องจากว่านเหนียน ทำงานในหอดาราศาสตร์ทั้งกลางวันกลางคืน ภายนอกหอก็มีทหารพิทักษ์รักษาเวรยาม มือสังหารจึงหาโอกาสฆ่าว่านเหนียนไม่ได้สักที กาลผ่านไปเนิ่นนาน มือสังหารจึงตัดสินใจใช้ธนูลอบยิง ว่านเหนียนถูกธนูที่แขน แต่คนร้ายเองที่ถูกจับนำไปสอบสวนต่อหน้าจู๋อี่ เมื่อความลับเปิดเผยขึ้น อาเหิงจึงถูกประหาร

ในคืนวันนั้นจู๋อี่ก็เสด็จไปเยี่ยมว่านเหนียนที่หอดาราศาสตร์ เมื่อไปถึงว่านเหนียนได้พูดว่า “ขณะนี้เป็นเวลาเที่ยงคืนพอดี ปีเก่ากำลังผ่านพ้น วสันตฤดูกำลังเริ่มต้น ขอพระองค์จงทรงตั้งชื่อวันนี้ไว้เป็นที่ระลึกเถิด จู๋อี่ จึงทรงตั้งชื่อวันนั้นว่า ตรุษวสันต์ แล้วทรงชวนว่านเหนียนไปพักรักษาตัวในราชวัง แต่ว่านเหนียนยืนหยัดที่จะทำงานในหอดาราศาสตร์ต่อไป

กาลเวลาผ่านไปอีกสามปี ว่านเหนียนจึงปฏิรูประบบปฏิทินเสร็จสมบูรณ์ แต่ทว่าบัดนี้ ว่านเหนียนผู้แต่เดิมยังเป็นหนุ่มฉกรรจ์ได้เปลี่ยนเป็นชายชราผมขาวโพลน โอรสสวรรค์จู๋อี่ทรงประทับพระทัยในอุตสาหะวิริยะของว่านเหนียน จึงทรงตั้งชื่อปฏิทินใหม่นั้นว่า “ปฏิทินว่านเหนียน” (ว่านเหนียนลี่) และทรงแต่งตั้งให้ว่านเหนียนเป็นเทพแห่งอายุวัฒนะ นี่เองคือต้นตอที่ชาวบ้านจีนเรียกตรุษวสันต์ว่า ‘กั้วเหนียน’และในเทศกาลนี้ชาวบ้านก็มักนิยมแขวนภาพ “เทพแห่งอายุวัฒนะ” (โส้วซิง) เพื่อรำลึกถึงคุณูปการความดีงามและคุณธรรมของ “ว่านเหนียน” นั่นเอง....

คืนก่อนวันปีใหม่
คือวันสุดท้ายของปีนั่นเองเป็นคืนที่ครึกครื้นที่สุด ใครที่ไปทำงานห่างจากบ้านเกิด ต่างก็พยายามอย่างสุดความสามารถที่จะกลับมาฉลองวันปีใหม่ที่บ้าน ตอนกินอาหารมื้อค่ำคืนก่อนขึ้นปีใหม่จีน ทุกคนในครอบครัวต่างนั่งกันพร้อมหน้าล้อมโต๊ะอาหาร ต่างชนแก้วอวยพรปีใหม่กัน ทานมื้อค่ำเรียบร้อยแล้ว บางคนก็ดูทีวี บางคนก็ฟังเพลง บางคนก็นั่งคุยกัน บางคนก็เล่นหยอกล้อกับเด็กๆ บ้านเต็มไปด้วยรอยยิ้ม และเสียงหัวเราะ พอถึงเที่ยงคืน คนจีนทางเหนือก็จะเริ่มทำเกี๊ยว (เจี้ยวจึ) คนจีนทางใต้ ก็จะปั้นลูกอี๋ทำน้ำเชื่อม ทำไป ชิมไปทานไป ครึกครื้นอย่างยิ่ง เช้าวันรุ่งขึ้นแต่เช้า ทุกคนจะตื่นแต่เช้า เยี่ยมเพื่อนบ้าน เพื่อนฝูงอวยพรปีใหม่

ประวัติวันตรุษจีน หรือปีใหม่จีน
ประวัติของวันขึ้นปีใหม่ของจีนมีความน่าสนใจเป็นอย่างยิ่ง ในวัฒนธรรมอื่นๆ ความปรารถนาสิ่งที่เราหวังว่าจะได้ปรับปรุง หรือที่เราคิดทำเมื่อเริ่มต้นในปีใหม่ มาถึงตอนนี้ ถ้าไม่ถูกลืมก็ถูกยัดลงกล่องใส่ตู้ปิดตายและแปะหน้าตู้ว่าไม่แน่ เอาไว้ทำปีหน้าแล้วกันอย่างไรก็ดี ความหวังก็คงยังไม่สูญไปทั้งหมดเพราะโอกาสที่สองกำลังมาถึงแล้ว กับการฉลองวันปีใหม่จีนหรือที่เรารู้จักกันว่า ตรุษจีนในวันที่ 17 กุมภาพันธ์นี้ นั้นเอง

ตรุษจีนนั้นคล้ายคลึงกับวันปีใหม่ในประเทศทางตะวันตก ร่องรอยของประเพณี และพิธีกรรมความเป็นมาของการฉลองตรุษจีน นั้นมีมานานกว่าศตวรรษ จริงๆแล้วนานมาก จนไม่สามารถย้อนกลับไปดูว่าเริ่มต้นฉลองมาตั้งแต่เมื่อไร เป็นที่รู้จักและจำได้ทั่วไปว่าเป็น การฉลองเทศกาลฤดูใบไม้ผลิ และการฉลองเป็นเวลานานถึง 15 วัน การเตรียมงานฉลองส่วนใหญ่จะเริ่มหนึ่งเดือนก่อนวันตรุษจีน (คล้ายกับวัน คริสต์มาสของประเทศตะวันตก) เมื่อผู้คนเริ่มซื้อของขวัญ, สิ่งต่างๆ เพื่อประดับบ้านเรือน, อาหารและเสื้อผ้า การทำความสะอาดครั้งใหญ่ก็เริ่มขึ้นในวันก่อนตรุษจีน บ้านเรือนจะถูก ทำความสะอาดตั้งแต่บนลงล่างหน้าบ้านยันท้ายบ้าน ซึ่งหมายถึงการกวาดเอาโชคร้าย ออกไป ประตูหน้าต่างมีการขัดสีฉวีวรรณทาสีใหม่ซึ่งสีแดงเป็นสีนิยม ประตูหน้าต่างจะถูก ประดับประดาด้วยกระดาษที่มีคำอวยพรอย่างเช่น อยู่ดีมีสุข ร่ำรวย และอายุยืนเป็นต้น

วันก่อนวันตรุษจีนนั้นเป็นวันแห่งการการรอคอยจะว่าไปถือวันที่น่าตื่นเต้นมากที่สุด ในบรรดาการฉลองทั้งหมดเห็นจะได้ ประเพณีและพิธีกรรมต่างๆ นั้นผูกไว้กับทุกสิ่งทุกอย่าง ตั้งแต่ อาหาร ไปจนถึงเสื้อผ้า อาหารค่ำนั้นประกอบด้วยอาหารทะเล และอาหารนึ่งเช่นขนมจีบ ซึ่งแต่ละอย่างจะมีความหมายต่างๆกัน อาหารอันโอชะอย่างเช่นกุ้งจะหมายถึงชีวิตที่รุ่งเรือง และความสุข เป๋าฮื้อแห้งหมายถึงทุกสิ่งทุกอย่างที่ดี สลัดปลาสดจะนำมาซึ่งโชคดี จี้ไช่ (ผมเทวดา) สาร่ายดูคล้ายผมแต่กินได้จะนำความความร่ำรวยมาให้ และขนมต้ม (Jiaozi) หมายถึงบรรพชนอวยพร และเป็นธรรมดาเสื้อผ้าที่ใส่สีแดงถือเป็นสีที่เป็นมงคลเป็นการไล่ปีศาจร้ายให้ออกไป และการใส่สีดำหรือขาวเป็นสิ่งต้องห้าม ซึ่งสีเหล่านี้ถือว่าเป็นสีแห่งการไว้ทุกข์ หลังจากอาหารค่ำทุกคนในครอบครัวนั่งกันจนเช้าเพื่อรอวันใหม่โดยการเล่นเกม เล่นไพ่ หรือดูรายการทีวีที่เกี่ยวกับวันตรุษจีน และในวันนี้จะต้องไม่โกรธ ริษยา หรือ ไม่พอใจ เพื่อเป็นสิริมงคลที่ดีสำหรับปีที่กำลังจะมาถึง

เมื่อถึงวันตรุษจีน ประเพณีตั้งแต่โบราณมาเรียกว่า อังเปา ซึ่งหมายถึง กระเป๋าแดง เป็นการที่คู่แต่งงานให้เงินเด็กๆ และผู้ใหญ่ที่ยังไม่ได้แต่งงานในซองสีแดง หลังจากนั้นทุกคน ในครอบครัว ต่าง ออกมาเพื่อกล่าวสวัสดีปีใหม่ เริ่มจากญาติๆ แล้วต่อด้วยเพื่อนบ้าน ซึ่งคงคล้ายกับการที่ชาวตะวันตกพูดว่า "Let bygones be bygones" (อะไรที่ผ่านไปแล้วก็ให้มันผ่านไป) ในวันตรุษนี้ อารมณ์โมโหโกรธาจะถูกลืม และไม่สนใจ การฉลองวันตรุษจีนสิ้นสุดลงในงานโคมไฟ ซึ่งฉลองโดยการร้องเพลง เต้นรำ และงานแสดงโคมไฟ ถึงแม้ว่าการฉลองวันตรุษจีน จะมีแตกต่างกันออกไปแต่สิ่งที่เหมือนกัน คือ การอวยพร ความสงบ และความสุขให้กับคนในครอบครัวและเพื่อนทุกคน

For many centuries, Christian writers accepted that Christmas was the actual date on which Jesus was born. In the early eighteenth century, scholars began proposing alternative explanations. Isaac Newton argued that the date of Christmas was selected to correspond with the winter solstice, which in ancient times was marked on December 25. In 1743, German Protestant Paul Ernst Jablonski argued Christmas was placed on December 25 to correspond with the Roman solar holiday Dies Natalis Solis Invicti and was therefore a "paganization" that debased the true church. In 1889, Louis Duchesne suggested that the date of Christmas was calculated as nine months after March 25, the traditional date of the conception of Jesus. On the Roman calendar, March 25 was the date of the spring equinox. In modern times, it is celebrated as Annunciation.

Non-Christian celebration

A winter festival was the most popular festival of the year in many cultures. Reasons included the fact that less agricultural work needs to be done during the winter, as well as people expecting longer days and shorter nights after the winter solstice in the Northern Hemisphere. Modern Christmas customs include: gift-giving and merrymaking from Roman Saturnalia; greenery, lights, and charity from the Roman New Year; and Yule logs and various foods from Teutonic feasts. Pagan Scandinavia celebrated a winter festival called Yule, held in the late December to early January period. As Northern Europe was the last part to Christianize, its pagan traditions had a major influence on Christmas. Scandinavians still call Christmas Jul. In English, the word Yule is synonymous with Christmas, a usage first recorded in 900.
Dies Natalis Solis Invicti
Dies Natalis Solis Invicti means "the birthday of the unconquered Sun." The use of the title Sol Invictus allowed several solar deities to be worshipped collectively, including Elah-Gabal, a Syrian sun god; Sol, the god of Emperor Aurelian; and Mithras, a soldiers' god of Persian origin. Emperor Elagabalus (218–222) introduced the festival, and it reached the height of its popularity under Aurelian, who promoted it as an empire-wide holiday. This day had held no significance in the Roman festive calendar until it was introduced in the third century.
The festival was placed on the date of the solstice because this was on this day that the Sun reversed its southward retreat and proved itself to be "unconquered." Several early Christian writers connected the rebirth of the sun to the birth of Jesus. "O, how wonderfully acted Providence that on that day on which that Sun was born...Christ should be born", Cyprian wrote. John Chrysostom also commented on the connection: "They call it the 'Birthday of the Unconquered'. Who indeed is so unconquered as Our Lord . . .?"
Patristic Developments
The New Testament does not give a date for the birth of Jesus. Around AD 200, Clement of Alexandria wrote that a group in Egypt celebrated the nativity on Pachon 25. This corresponds to January 6, now Epiphany. Tertullian (d. 220) does not mention Christmas as a major feast day in the Church of Roman Africa. In Chronographai, a reference work published in 221, Sextus Julius Africanus suggested that Jesus was conceived on the spring equinox. The equinox was March 25 on the Roman calendar, so this implies a birth in December.

De Pascha Computus, a calendar of feasts produced in 243, gives March 28 as the date of the nativity. In 245, the theologian Origen of Alexandria stated that, "only sinners (like Pharaoh and Herod)" celebrated their birthdays.[24] In 303, Christian writer Arnobius ridiculed the idea of celebrating the birthdays of gods, which suggests that Christmas was not yet a feast at this time.
Feast established
The earliest reference to the celebration of the nativity on December 25 is found in the Chronography of 354, an illuminated manuscript compiled in Rome in 354. In the East, early Christians celebrated the birth of Christ as part of Epiphany (January 6), although this festival focused on the baptism of Jesus.
Christmas was promoted in the Christian East as part of the revival of Catholicism following the death of the pro-Arian Emperor Valens at the Battle of Adrianople in 378. The feast was introduced to Constantinople in 379, and to Antioch in about 380. The feast disappeared after Gregory of Nazianzus resigned as bishop in 381, although it was reintroduced by John Chrysostom in about 400.
The Twelve Days of Christmas end on January 5. December 26 is St. Stephen's Day and January 6 is Feast of Epiphany This period encompasses the major feasts surrounding the birth of Christ. In the Latin Rite, one week after Christmas Day, January 1, has traditionally been the celebration the Feast of the Naming and Circumcision of Christ, but since Vatican II, this feast has been celebrated as the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God.
Middle Ages
In the Early Middle Ages, Christmas Day was overshadowed by Epiphany, which in the west focused on the visit of the magi. But the Medieval calendar was dominated by Christmas-related holidays. The forty days before Christmas became the "forty days of St. Martin" (which began on November 11, the feast of St. Martin of Tours), now known as Advent. In Italy, former Saturnalian traditions were attached to Advent.[28] Around the 12th century, these traditions transferred again to the Twelve Days of Christmas (December 26 – January 6); a time that appears in the liturgical calendars as Christmastide or Twelve Holy Days.

The prominence of Christmas Day increased gradually after Charlemagne was crowned Emperor on Christmas Day in 800. King Edmund the Martyr was anointed on Christmas in 855 and King William I of England was crowned on Christmas Day 1066.
By the High Middle Ages, the holiday had become so prominent that chroniclers routinely noted where various magnates celebrated Christmas. King Richard II of England hosted a Christmas feast in 1377 at which twenty-eight oxen and three hundred sheep were eaten. The Yule boar was a common feature of medieval Christmas feasts. Caroling also became popular, and was originally a group of dancers who sang. The group was composed of a lead singer and a ring of dancers that provided the chorus. Various writers of the time condemned caroling as lewd, indicating that the unruly traditions of Saturnalia and Yule may have continued in this form. "Misrule" — drunkenness, promiscuity, gambling — was also an important aspect of the festival. In England, gifts were exchanged on New Year's Day, and there was special Christmas ale.
Christmas during the Middle Ages was a public festival that incorporating ivy, holly, and other evergreens. Christmas gift-giving during the Middle Ages was usually between people with legal relationships, such as tenant and landlord.

A full calendar system has a different calendar date for every day. Thus the week cycle is by itself not a full calendar system; neither is a system to name the days within a year without a system for identifying the years.
The simplest calendar system just counts time periods from a reference date. This applies for the Julian day. Virtually the only possible variation is using a different reference date, in particular one less distant in the past to make the numbers smaller. Computations in these systems are just a matter of addition and subtraction.
Other calendars have one (or multiple) larger units of time.
Calendars that contain one level of cycles:
week and weekday – this system (without year, the week number keeps on increasing) is not very common
year and ordinal date within the year, e.g. the ISO 8601 ordinal date system
Calendars with two levels of cycles:
year, month, and day – most systems, including the Gregorian calendar (and its very similar predecessor, the Julian calendar), the Islamic calendar, and the Hebrew calendar
year, week, and weekday – e.g. the ISO week date
Cycles can be synchronized with periodic phenomena:
A lunar calendar is synchronized to the motion of the Moon (lunar phases); an example is the Islamic calendar.
A solar calendar is based on perceived seasonal changes synchronized to the apparent motion of the Sun; an example is the Persian calendar.
There are some calendars that appear to be synchronized to the motion of Venus, such as some of the ancient Egyptian calendars; synchronization to Venus appears to occur primarily in civilizations near the Equator.
The week cycle is an example of one that is not synchronized to any external phenomenon (although it may have been derived from lunar phases, beginning anew every month).
Very commonly a calendar includes more than one type of cycle, or has both cyclic and acyclic elements. A lunisolar calendar is synchronized both to the motion of the moon and to the apparent motion of the sun; an example is the Hebrew calendar.
Many calendars incorporate simpler calendars as elements. For example, the rules of the Hebrew calendar depend on the seven-day week cycle (a very simple calendar), so the week is one of the cycles of the Hebrew calendar. It is also common to operate two calendars simultaneously, usually providing unrelated cycles, and the result may also be considered a more complex calendar. For example, the Gregorian calendar has no inherent dependence on the seven-day week, but in Western society the two are used together, and calendar tools indicate both the Gregorian date and the day of week.
The week cycle is shared by various calendar systems (although the significance of special days such as Friday, Saturday, and Sunday varies). Systems of leap days usually do not affect the week cycle. The week cycle was not even interrupted when 10, 11, 12, or 13 dates were skipped when the Julian calendar was replaced by the Gregorian calendar by various countries.

Calendar subdivisions
Nearly all calendar systems group consecutive days into "months" and also into "years". In a solar calendar a year approximates Earth's tropical year (that is, the time it takes for a complete cycle of seasons), traditionally used to facilitate the planning of agricultural activities. In a lunar calendar, the month approximates the cycle of the moon phase. Consecutive days may be grouped into other periods such as the week.
Because the number of days in the tropical year is not a whole number, a solar calendar must have a different number of days in different years. This may be handled, for example, by adding an extra day (29 February) in leap years. The same applies to months in a lunar calendar and also the number of months in a year in a lunisolar calendar. This is generally known as intercalation. Even if a calendar is solar, but not lunar, the year cannot be divided entirely into months that never vary in length.
Cultures may define other units of time, such as the week, for the purpose of scheduling regular activities that do not easily coincide with months or years. Many cultures use different baselines for their calendars' starting years. For example, the year in Japan is based on the reign of the current emperor: 2006 was Year 18 of the Emperor Akihito.

Arithmetic and astronomical calendars
An astronomical calendar is based on ongoing observation; examples are the religious Islamic calendar and the old religious Jewish calendar in the time of the Second Temple. Such a calendar is also referred to as an observation-based calendar. The advantage of such a calendar is that it is perfectly and perpetually accurate. The disadvantage is that working out when a particular date would occur is difficult.
An arithmetic calendar is one that is based on a strict set of rules; an example is the current Jewish calendar. Such a calendar is also referred to as a rule-based calendar. The advantage of such a calendar is the ease of calculating when a particular date occurs. The disadvantage is imperfect accuracy. Furthermore, even if the calendar is very accurate, its accuracy diminishes slowly over time, owing to changes in Earth's rotation. This limits the lifetime of an accurate arithmetic calendar to a few thousand years. After then, the rules would need to be modified from observations made since the invention of the calendar.

Since several decades, the westerner New Year's day is also a public holiday in Thailand. But the popular New Year's day for Thai people happens in April; it is called "SONGKRAN". The reference point is Lord Buddha's birth 543 before Jesus Christ.

12 : Thai children Day / วันเด็กแห่งชาติ
During this day, feasts organized by children happen. Children are highly respected in Thailand. In a bus an adult often gives his seat to a child but not to an elderly person. This day always happens on the second saturday in January.

16 : Teachers Day / วันครู
This day is an occasion for pupils to make merit for their teachers. Teachers are highly worshipped in Thailand for their knownledge. Pupils do not dare to embarrass their teachers.

25 : Thai Army Day / วันกองทัพไทย
During this day, Thai King Rama IX visits the army and watches a military parad.

FEBRUARY
07 : Chinese New Year's Day / วันตรุษจีน
Thailand has more than 60 millions of inhabitants. Around 6 millions of them have Chinese ancestors that immigrated to Thailand last century. So Chinese New year's day is an important public holiday.

14 : Valentine's Day / วันวาเลนไทน์

21 : Makabucha day / วันมาฆาบูชา
It came from the day when 1250 disciples from the Lord Buddha gathered to listen for the Dharma speech after Buddha's enlightment.

06 : Chakri day / วันที่ระลึกมหาจักรีบรมราชวงศ์
This public holiday commemorates the Chakri dynasty. The current King is the ninth King of the Chakri dynasty. A Royal ceremony is performed by the King to pay respects to King Rama I the Great, the founder of the Chakri Dynasty.

13-14-15 : Songkran / วันสงกรานต์
The "SONGKRAN" festival happens in the hot season in half of april. This festival happens in all Buddhist "THEREVADA" countries like Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Burma. Songkran is the ancient New Year's Day. Now the official New Year's Day happens the 1st January. But the most popular feast is still "SONGKRAN".

05 : Coronation day / วั�B8�าขบูชา
This day is a Buddhist public holiday. This day commemorates the birth, the enlightment and the death (entry into the nirvana) of Buddha. Temples through the country are crowded with people listening to sermons about Dharma (Buddha's teaching) and in the evening there is a candlelit procession around the main building of the temple containing the Buddha statues.

This day, which is a Buddhist public holiday, happens one day just before the Buddhist Lent day. This day commemorates the first sermon of Buddha to his five first disciples. One of them asked for being a monk. So this day is sacred because it deals with Buddha, Dharma and Sangha. There are also candlelit processions.

18 : Buddhist Lent day / วันเข้าพรรษา
This day is a Buddhist public holiday. It is the beginning of the buddhist rain retreat which last three months. During this period monks are not allowed to sleep outside their temple. Thai people buy big candles and offer them to temples.

AUGUST
12 : H.M. The Queen's Birthday / วันเฉลิมพระชนมพรรษา สมเด็จพระนางเจ้าฯ พระบรมราชินีนาถ
This public holiday is the day of all the mothers of Thailand. Especially the Queen, the mother of all Thai people. On this day all the buildings of Thailand are covered up with images of H.M. The Queen.

During his reign, Thailand became a modern country.

Loi Krathong is a religious event which happens every year on the full moon of the 12th lunar month (first full moon day of November). All Thai people buy or make a "KRATHONG". It is made of styrofoam surrounded by banana leaves, with flowers and a candle in the middle. Then in the evening, Thai people go to places where there is a river, a pound to launch their "KRATHONG".

DECEMBER

This public holiday is the day of all the fathers of Thailand. Especially the King Rama IX, the father of all Thai people. This day is the birthday of the current Thai King. All the buildings of Thailand are covered up with symbols of the monarchy and the King.

10 : Constitution Day / วันพระราชทานรัฐธรรมบูญ
Since 1932 Thailand is a democracy. Before 1932, Thailand was called Siam and was under the total rule of the King. Now Thailand is a democracy. The king has still some power, but just a moral power over Thai people, who worship him for all its kindness and goodness. Thailand is like England : a King with no real power, a government and no president. This public holiday is the day to commemorate the Thai constitution.

This public holiday is the last day of the year. The New Year holiday and "SONGKRAN" period have always high accident tolls. During New year holiday 2002, 501 people were killed in traffic accidents. Many were found to have been caused by reckless and drunk motorcyclists.
